How get subtitles?

I want to turn subtitles on and off and also switch tracks.
But Google doesn't have any information on how to do this.

I am using html5 video, the standard properties do not work.
The only option I have found is to use com.webos.media/getActivePipelines however it only works on rooted TVs.

Any ideas in which direction to dig?
